Theater Screen: BMW wants to turn cars into a cinema with this giant screen

At this year's CES Consumer Technology Show, BMW unveiled a new technology in the car called the Theater Screen. It is a giant screen size of 31 inches and resolution of 8K and 32:9 format that can be installed in the roof of luxury cars for rear-seat passengers.

After unveiling the BMW iX Flow, the first SUV capable of changing colours, the German automaker has introduced a giant screen to turn its cars into a cinema. The BMW Theater Screen entertainment system uses a 31-inch widescreen display with a resolution of 8K (8000 x 2000 pixels), which can be operated from the roof of the car. Passengers can adjust its angle according to the inclination of their seat.

The screen uses a 32:9 aspect ratio similar to many cinemas. The screen can display content in 16:9, 21:9 and 32:9 formats, and has 5G connectivity to integrate with Amazon Fire TV. The Fire TV experience allows back seat passengers to enjoy a variety of content from popular apps, so they can stream movies and TV episodes, listen to music and watch downloaded programmes, all while on the go. This is the first in-car Amazon Fire TV integration.

A true cinematic experience and exceptional sound

In addition to the cinema-friendly format, BMW has used the Bowers and Wilkins Diamond surround sound system consisting of 30 speakers to deliver cinema-like sound. And if you don't want to touch the screen, the company has also added touchpad controls in the car's rear doors.

In addition, the system also supports dual wired or wireless headphones, allowing rear passengers to enjoy the screen without disturbing the driver. BMW did not stop there, because the screen is not the only one that gives you a cinematic experience. The BMW “My Mode Theater” setting allows you to adjust the lighting and window shades to provide you with a “private cinema”.

So far, it's not clear when the first cars that can accommodate such a system will be released, but we shouldn't have to wait long to see the first compatible models.
